Welland Utilizes JavaFX and Eclipse4 to Modernize Its Flagship Software Application, EXPORT™

Coupeville, WA (May 19, 2014) – Welland Company has completed implementation of a new software interface for its flagship product, EXPORT™, through the use of Java FX and Eclipse4 technologies.

Welland’s EXPORT™ is designed to help you retrieve information quickly and easily from any UniVerse/UniData database allowing for data to be mined, warehoused or web-enabled. It translates the complex and specialized U2 data into an industry-standard format such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle. This allows clients quicker, more reliable, and easier data access and reporting. While the EXPORT™ server has continually been improved and offered robust functionality, the EXPORT™ client interface had been stagnant for a number of years.

The interface overhaul started with a mandate — “Make it look like it wasn’t built in 1995!” — and a mockup from a graphic designer. After analyzing several technology options, Welland decided on JavaFX and Eclipse4. Using a combination of CSS, FXML, and custom renderers, they were able to achieve an interface that looks almost identical to the designer’s vision while still preserving the developer’s requirements of a modular, decoupled and maintainable system.
